Need an Idea for Your Online Course Business? Use What You Already Know!

One of the biggest things that hold professionals back from starting a profitable online course business?

“I don’t know what to teach.”

If that’s you, stop right there.

You already have everything you need—your knowledge, skills, and experience.

You’re a professional.
You’ve put in years of work mastering your craft.
You’ve earned your expertise through blood, sweat, and tears.

That expertise is exactly what others will PAY YOU for regardless if they are novice or well seasoned!

But I get it—sometimes it’s hard to step outside of your own head and figure out how to package what you know into a course. You likely are suffering from limiting beliefs thinking to yourself “I really don’t know anything special…”

That is horseshit! YOU DO! I can guarantee you that new grads within your profession are foaming at the mouth to get to the level you are at! That is just one example…

That’s why I created the ProCourseStart Idea Generator—a simple tool that walks you through how to turn your real-world experience into a high-demand online course. It will help you dial in your idea and niche!

But before we get into that, let’s go over exactly how to find your perfect course topic.

Step 1: Identify a Specific Problem You Can Solve

The most successful online courses solve a specific problem for a specific type of professional.

Ask yourself:
✅ What challenges do professionals in my industry struggle with?
✅ What have I learned over the years that has made my job/business easier?
✅ What do people constantly ask me for advice on?

The secret? Your best course idea will come from a problem you’ve already solved in your own career.

Your knowledge is valuable because it saves people time, money, and frustration.

Let’s break this down with niche examples.

Step 2: Find a Profitable Niche

The biggest mistake you can make?

Going too broad.

A course called “How to Be a Successful Accountant” is way too vague.

Instead, you want a laser-focused niche that speaks to a specific group of professionals harnessing the knowledge that is in brain.

Here are examples how to go from broad and generic with your idea to niche and high-value in four different professions.

Example: Healthcare Professionals

Too Broad: “How to Improve Patient Care”
Who is this for? Doctors? Physical therapists? Nurses? Too general.

Profitable Niche Course Idea: “How to Create a High-Performance Exercise Rehab Program for Post-Surgical Patients”
Why it works: Physical therapists and rehab specialists NEED better ways to help post-surgical patients recover. This course solves a specific problem and targets a clear audience.

Other Healthcare Course Ideas:
“Mastering Medical Charting & Documentation for Physician Assistants”
“How to Launch a Profitable Oncology Practice”
“Advanced Mitochondrial Health Training for Holistic Practitioners”

Example: Legal Professionals

Too Broad: “How to Start a Successful Law Practice”
What kind of law? What size of firm? What’s the actual problem being solved?

Profitable Niche Course Idea: “How to Build a Highly Profitable Estate Planning Practice with No Litigation”
Why it works: Estate planning attorneys are actively looking for ways to scale without dealing with litigation. This is a clear, niche audience with a pain point that needs solving.

Other Legal Course Ideas:
“The Solo Practitioner’s Guide to Winning Federal Contracting Cases”
“How to Build a 7-Figure Immigration Law Firm with Automated Systems”
“Negotiation Strategies for Criminal Defense Attorneys”

Example: Finance Professionals

Too Broad: “How to Be a Better Financial Advisor”
What type of financial advisor? What problem are you solving?

Profitable Niche Course Idea: “Tax-Efficient Investment Strategies for High-Net-Worth Individuals”
Why it works: High-net-worth clients need very specific tax-efficient investment strategies. Financial advisors and tax professionals are actively searching for this type of training to integrate into their practice to ultimately increase their revenue.

Other Finance Course Ideas:
“The Ultimate Guide to Building a Profitable Fractional CFO Business”
“How to Create Passive Income with Private Lending as a CPA”
“Certified Divorce Financial Analyst (CDFA) Training for Accountants”

Example: Technology Professionals

Too Broad: “How to Get Into Cybersecurity”
Cybersecurity is a massive field—this title doesn’t tell me who it’s for or what it teaches.

Profitable Niche Course Idea: “Mastering Cloud Security Compliance for AWS & Azure”
Why it works: Cloud security is a huge pain point in the tech world, and professionals specializing in AWS & Azure are in high demand.

 Other Tech Course Ideas:
“How to Automate Threat Detection with Python for Cybersecurity Analysts”
“AI-Driven Marketing Analytics for Digital Marketers”
“Penetration Testing for Government IT Professionals”

Step 3: Use the ProCourseStart Idea Generator to Find YOUR Course Idea

  1. I have been an Urology PA for over 20 years. Have been desperate to find a way out of the every day grind. I actually started being a distributor for Enagic last year but didn’t go far with it because I felt ( not sure of the word I’m looking for) anyway, I really feel like starting a business is the best way to go these days. I am not sure how it works financially and definitely need an accountant because I am not even close to having money to retire.

    1. Hey Jill,

If you have been a PA in urology for 20 years, then you are a PRO at it. Why not leverage that? Do you know how clueless many providers are on urology? I really think you could leverage that knowledge and start a pretty awesome CE business. It takes about $5-10k to start depending on how much you do yourself vs delegating it. THis business could easily result in $10k+ a month once word gets out and you build a following. Email me if you have any questions. justin@procoursestart.com
