The ProCourseStart Pillars

The five non-negotiables behind a successful CE business.

  1. I.

    the problem

Identify a real problem and deliver the solution.

Every successful course business starts with a real problem. I want you to identify a problem in your profession and build a solution that makes someone’s professional life better. That problem—and the result you help create—becomes your value proposition.

You already have knowledge and skills from your career that other people in your field need. Very few professionals turn that expertise into focused education, which is exactly why this opportunity exists. Before you think about platforms, branding, or production, get clear on the problem, who has it, and why your solution matters.

I consider this non-negotiable. Work out the problem and solution before you move forward.

  2. II.

    marketing

    Make marketing the number-one function.

You can build the best course in the world, but it will not matter if nobody knows it exists. Marketing has to be the number-one function of your course business.

You need to know exactly who your audience is, what frustrates them, where they spend time, and how to reach them. Effective marketing helps you build an audience, create loyal followers, and develop a repeatable path to customers. It cannot be something you bolt on after the course is finished.

Your course is the product. Marketing is what turns it into a business.

  3. III.

    free content

    Publish valuable free content consistently.

Consistent, useful free content is how you establish credibility, build trust, grow an audience, and improve your search visibility.

I spent more time creating free content for The Elite Nurse Practitioner than on anything else in that business. It paid off because the audience and trust became the customer base. Write articles if writing is your strength. Record videos if you like being on camera. Start a podcast if conversation comes naturally. The format matters less than the value and consistency.

Teach people something useful before you ask them to buy.

  4. IV.

    income-generating work

Focus on income-generating work, not technical details.

I have watched too many aspiring course creators spend weeks comparing platforms, hosting, and software while avoiding the work that actually builds the business.

Your customers do not care what happens behind the scenes. They care whether you understand their problem and can help solve it. Focus on your value proposition, your core products, your audience, and your content—the work that creates demand and generates income. Technology should support those priorities, not replace them.

Do not let technical details become a hiding place.

  5. V.

    the right people

    Build with the right people.

I built The Elite Nurse Practitioner on my own for years, and eventually I reached the limit of what one person could carry. If you want the business to grow beyond your own time, you need the right people around it.

That means operational help for customer service and technical work, plus professional collaborators who can contribute knowledge and develop courses beyond your own expertise. You do not need a huge team. You need a business that can operate and grow without depending on you for everything.

The goal is not a large team. It is a stronger business that is not limited by one person.
